Long after David was dead, Jeremiah and Hosea still looked for David their king, in the latter days.

At Qumran the same hope was written in the Dead Sea Scrolls: the Branch of David, standing in Zion in the last days, to raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen.
Dead Sea Scrolls, 4Q174 Florilegium: This is the Branch of David, who shall stand up with the Interpreter of the Law in Zion in the last days; even as it is written: I shall raise up the tabernacle of David which is fallen. This is the tabernacle of David which is fallen, that shall arise to deliver Israel.
And in the Book of the Servant the work is named again: he shall gather the remnant of Jacob, and build again the tabernacle of David that is fallen.
When Christ came to the Nephites He took up Isaiah’s words, my servant shall deal prudently, and set them in the latter-day work: a servant marred, yet healed.
Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 20:43: Behold, my servant shall deal prudently; he shall be exalted and extolled and be very high.

Asked of ABEL: How is Moses a type and shadow of the Servant who is to be like unto him?
ABEL answers: Moses set the mold: a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee. Hidden at birth and made ready in the wilderness, he came back with a rod to lead Israel out of bondage. The Lord said the pattern would return when His words were taken from the book: I will raise up another like unto thee, a seer great like unto Moses, to lead them like as Moses led the children of Israel.
Deuteronomy 18:18: I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
Moses 1:41: And in a day when the children of men shall esteem my words as naught and take many of them from the book which thou shalt write, behold, I will raise up another like unto thee; and they shall be had again among the children of men—among as many as shall believe.
2 Nephi 3:9: And he shall be great like unto Moses, whom I have said I would raise up unto you, to deliver my people, O house of Israel.
D&C 103:16: Therefore, I will raise up unto my people a man, who shall lead them like as Moses led the children of Israel.

What is the root of Jesse?

Is the scripture really free?

Why read beyond the Standard Works?
The scriptures themselves say there is more. Nephi saw other books come forth to establish the truth of the first (1 Nephi 13:39), and the Lord said He would speak to the other tribes of Israel and to all nations, and they would write it (2 Nephi 29:12).
We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and that He will yet reveal many great and important things (Articles of Faith 1:9).
How should I read the Apocrypha and other ancient records?
The way the Lord told Joseph Smith to read the Apocrypha: there is much in it that is true (D&C 91:1), and whoever reads it should read with understanding, for the Spirit manifests truth (D&C 91:4), and whoever is enlightened by the Spirit will benefit from it (D&C 91:5).
